Work Experience

Member of Minnesota State Patrol from 1961 to 1983. Investigated over one thousand accidents during that time.

Called on as an expert to assist other police agencies and sheriffs' departments in the reconstruction of accidents to determine the possible presence of criminal negligence or in order to determine accident facts in other criminal matters.

Consultant to other police forces in Iowa, Michigan, Connecticut, Delaware, Alaska, Mississippi, South Dakota, Arizona, California, Louisiana, Hawaii, Missouri, New Jersey, Washington, Maryland, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Tennessee, Idaho, Utah, Wisconsin, New York, Massachusetts, and Canada.

Private consultant since 1966 to insurance companies and law firms reconstructing accidents in cases where civil litigation is pending. Testified over 400 times as an expert witness in State and Federal Courts.

Teaching Experience 

Lecture on "Pitfalls in Accident Reconstruction and Court Testimony," IPTM, University of North Florida, May 2000.

Lecture on "Traffic Accident Determination and Reconstruction" to the Department of Transportation, Taiwan Provincial Government, December 1998.

Instructor at Minnesota State Patrol Recruit Schools from 1966 to 1983. In that capacity I have taught over one thousand hours of accident investigation.

Conducted tests with skidding cars for accident schools including work with critical speed scuffs. Instructed over 1300 hours of speed determinations from skid marks and the use of speed formulas.

Accident reconstruction to Federal Department of Transportation personnel at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Taught courses in Accident Investigation and Technical Accident Investigation for Northwestern University Traffic Institute in many states, including North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Missouri, Oregon, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Washington, Connecticut, Vermont and elsewhere.

Conducted seminars in accident investigation and reconstruction for the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Wisconsin Supreme Court Continuing Legal Education Program, American Bar Association, various judges and attorneys groups, engineering groups,insurance groups, police departments, motor fleet safety associations, Trailways Bus Lines, and numerous civic and social groups.

Prepared the criteria and materials for an accident reconstruction course conducted in Minnesota and elsewhere in the United States and Canada.

Conducted frequent seminars in light bulb filament examination and evaluation in the United States and Canada.

Conducted courses, including vehicle dynamics and conservation of momentum, to Gustavus Adolphus College, Pennsylvania State University, Northwestern University, University of North Florida, Oregon State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and University of South Carolina.

Taught two-week accident reconstruction course to police in Maine, Delaware, Idaho, New Mexico, Michigan, Massachusetts, Missouri, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Conducted numerous one-week courses in Advanced Accident Investigation to police officers throughout the United States since 1970.

Author of: HANDBOOK FOR THE ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTIONIST, a training text for police officers.

Author of: "Mechanics of Automobile Accident Reconstruction," presented at an Automobile Accident Reconstruction seminar for Minnesota Institute of Legal Education (MILE).

Author of: "Accident Reconstruction - A Primer," presented at an Automobile Personal Injury Litigation seminar for MILE.

Created a project making scale accidents using scale vehicles. This project appeared in Traffic Digest and Review, a publication of Northwestern University.

Researched a drag factor device and presented a report to Northwestern University. Continue to conduct tests with drag factor comparing vehicle and drag factor devices.

Prepared, at the request of Greyhound, Inc., a lesson plan for their use in teaching field accident investigation to company personnel.

Author of: "Speed Determination and Scene Reconstruction," published in Science In the Court Room - Civil-Criminal, by Professor John Sonsteng and Bart Epstein, William Mitchell College of Law, March 1981.

Director of a Minnesota State Patrol project utilizing the grid photography system of accident investigation. This appeared as an article in the FBI Magazine in 1978.

Reviewed all accident reports submitted by Minnesota State Patrol members over a three-year period.

Researched vehicle weight shift and its effect on braking.

Conducted research with skidding trucks, tractor, and semi-trailer combinations.

Designed a lesson plan teaching vehicle dynamics and computed speed at impact utilizing the conservation of momentum, requested by Northwestern University.
